ENCOMPASS NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 1, 2009
WHAT'S NEW AT ENCOMPASS

Firstly, we welcome to the world - Tilly Grace Ryan O'Flynn. Kate O'Flynn, our fertility expert (who is evidently very proficient at what she does), is currently on maternity leave after the birth of her daughter, born 2:16am, 1st August. Both are doing well. She will be back in practice towards the end of the year, but while she is off, her colleague Anna Kilmartin will be looking after her patients. Anna is a fully qualified Naturopath who trained with Kate for two years during her studies. Kate has handed over her files to Anna and will review each of your health concerns with her as required. She will be available every 2nd Friday.

We are saddened to say goodbye to Heather, who as you would all know has been looking after the clinic from the front desk. We wish her all the very best for her future endeavours. In her place you will see Andrew. You may not have officially met Andrew yet, but very likely you would have seen him working in the clinic from time to time, and so he's looking forward to meeting you next time you're in.

Sonya Matthews our Reflexologist will now be available on Fridays and Saturdays from 8am-2pm,. Not only is Sonya an experienced Reflexologist, but also a Lymphatic Drainage massage therapist. Read the Lymphatic Drainage information below for more information.

Winter Wellness. Winter is well and truly here, and with winter, usually comes a change in habits such as eating and exercising. As the days are now shorter and colder, it can become more difficult to motivate ourselves to get out and be active, especially getting out of bed in the dark to exercise in the cold and/or wet. With that we often find our bodies become stiffer, our muscles a little tighter, our metabolism slows down. As life slows a little in the colder months, and we find ourselves turning inwards, this is the ideal opportunity to take the time to nurture ourselves and our health. Its time to address those issues that have been long standing and neglected, both on a body level and emotionally. Read our Winter Wellness section below to help you get through winter unscathed.

Cathy Smith is our newest Naturopath who will be joining us here at Encompass in September. She specialises is working with toddlers, children and teenagers, and will be a great asset for all you parents out there that come to the clinic. Initially she will be working all day Wednesday, and we are available to take bookings now. We will have more information on Cathy in our next issue. In the meantime, for more information, please visit our website, or call us on 9904-1333 and we can help you with your questions.

Sydney Fun Runs. Sydney is in the middle of fun-run season, of which the next one is the Blackmores Bridge Run. It is a common belief that only elite level athletes need special support while training, but in actual fact your body is undergoing more changes and progressions than an elite athlete so you potentially need more support and care.

All our practitioners are now offering a 10% for Seniors and Pensioner Concession card holders. Please let us know if you qualify and from then on, your discount will be automatically applied.

WINTER WELLNESS

Winter is usually the time when we find it most difficuly to maintain our current weight - whether it be fine wine and food, or the thought of running in the cold is too much, or just that winter clothes are just too good at hiding what's beneath. Naturopathy can be extremely effective in helping to maintain your metabolic rate. Having a healthy metabolic rate is important in maintaining or reducing your weight.

With the change in season often comes colds or virus. The best way to prevent getting any illness is to keep our immunity up. If you have any doubts about your immunity the first step you need to take is visit a Naturopath. A consultation with one of our Naturopaths is essential in winter. They can give you advice as to what you may need to help prevent any illness, by improving your overall health and immunity, as well as maintaining a healthy metabolism. At Encompass we have Tania, Anna and Cathy who can help.

If, unfortunately, you are unable to avoid a cold or flu this winter, at the first sign of any symptoms, make an appointment to see Lucas for acupuncture. Acupuncture can reduce the severity of symptoms as well as the duration, if treatment is had early in the course of the illness. Here are some wise words from Lucas:

"Do you change the way you live over the seasons?
Harmony with the seasons is second nature to the balanced person. Unfortunately, most of us have blunted our instinctual awareness of how we might act differently according to the environment and only through practices that bring us close to the cycles of nature, do we begin to hear the voice of our own nature clearly.

In Daoism the world is represented as a dance of opposing forces: Yin and Yang.

While Yang is active, hot, functional very vibrant and engaging with the outside world, Yin is relatively cooler, quiet, nourishing and represents a inward turn of attention.

We are currently in winter, the most Yin season. Here are a list of lifestyle changes that will assist you in nourishing your Yin,
• Sleeping longer: going to bed earlier and ideally getting up a little later.
• Eating warm cooked or stewed foods and soups. Salty foods (yin) and root vegetables are best eaten in this season and excessive spices are to be avoided.
• Finally, this is a time to turn inward. Store energy for the coming warmer months and take the time to enjoy the quietness and reflect on the events past recently."

When it comes to body aches and joint stiffness, Chiropractic is a gentle solution to improve joint mobility and associated muscle spasms and tightness. The cold weather can cause some old injuries to resurface, which is an indicator that there are some degenerative changes occuring in the joints, namely Osteoarthritis or Degenerative Joint Disease. Its very important to minimise further degeneration and deformity of your joints, so come see Martina for Chiropractic, which is an effective and important part of the solution to reducing the natural progression of Osteoarthritis. Acupuncture is also an important factor in the course of treatment and has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms from Osteoarthritis by 75%. Otherwise treat yourself to a massage which is great for the body and the mind.

SYDNEY FUN RUNS

It's 4 week until the next Sydney Fun Run -the Blackmores Bridge Run. When we are training for something like this it is important that our bodies and minds are prepared as well as they can be. It is a common belief that only elite level athletes need special support while training, but in actual fact your body is undergoing more changes and progressions than an elite athlete so you potentially need more support and care.

So come in and see Martina and have a Chiropractic check-up to make sure your body's aligned and up for the challenge. If there are any imbalances to our structure and biomechanics, we are often not immediately aware of them while doing day to day activities, but as soon as we challenge our body by changing our activities or increasing our level of exercise, we can soon feel some symptoms. This is by no means a reason to stop exercising, just an indication that we need a chiropractic tune up!

Then while you're training its important to support yourself by looking after your feet, your diet and your aching muscles.

Reflexology with Sonya can be a great support for your feet and your mind. Reflexology can help in many ways including:
- Working the reflex points in the feet to release tension in the body
- Stretching tight foot muscles to assist in avoiding foot injuries
- Assisting and supporting you in achieving your goals and reaching your potential.

Sonya is offering a 'Sydney Fun Run' Special. Book in for 3 or more visits and you receive 25% discount!

A massage with Lucas is very beneficial to help you reach your goals. When training for something it is important to have a training strategy from the onset. A regular massage can reduce any injuries that will interfere with your training schedule and therefore your physical progression. Common issues such as shin splints, and hip and knee problems can be detected and treated at an early stage and stop the progression to injury, which would stop you from training.

When putting your body through something more challenging than it is familiar with, it is also important to supply your body with the correct nutrients and vitamins. Your caloric needs will change, whether your intention in training is to improve your fitness, or just to lose weight, and so its a good idea to get advice as to how you need to change your diet to get your required outcome. You will also need to support your muscles and joints to keep up with the training, as well as for your body's recovery. Tania or Anna can help with their great knowledge of nutrition and naturopathy.

To get the most out of us we need to believe we can rise to the challenge and not give up, if you have any doubts or lacking confidence in your abillities maybe its time to see Nada our Kinesiologist. she has had great success in releasing any limiting beliefs that often hold us back from achieving our dreams and goals.

If you are participating, we wish you the best of luck. Look out for Andrew and Martina, they'll be running their hardest!

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE
Lymphatic Drainage is a touch based modality that works on your subtle anatomy, subtle energy and lymphatic sytem. Visit our website for more information. This technique has significant effects for clients suffering from lymphatic dysfunction. The lymphatic system is our drainage system that eliminates toxins and removes large protein matter from tissue spaces and supplies proteins, fats, hormones and lymphocytes to all cells. It is an integral part of the immune system, protecting the body from antigens and pathogens.

When the lymphatic system has been compromised, swelling of an area can been seen as the lymphatic system cannot remove the accumulation of water and protein. This may be due to trauma from surgery, protein deficiency, sprains, strains, cirrhosis of the liver, allergic reactions or pericarditis.

This lymphatic drainage technique uses light pressure as heavy pressure may compromise or block the lymphatic node or gland. Benefits of the treatment can usually be seen after the 3rd of 4th treatment. Crystals are used in this technique to create a vibrational field which induces a state of resonance, thus enhancing wellbeing for the client.

This one hour treatment with Sonya may also be combined with Reflexology and is especially beneficial for those suffering from fluid retention.

Other benefits of this treatment include:
• Reduces fatigue symtoms
• Improves your lymphatic system
• Eliminates toxins
• Emotionally balancing
• Improves wellbeing

Congratulations
to Martina
and Sonya
for their
outstanding
efforts in the
Blackmores
Bridge Run.
