What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture therapy is a safe and natural way of promoting healing and providing relief from painful conditions. This is achieved by superficial insertion of super-fine, sterile needles into the body. In fact, Acupuncture needles are 22 times finer than most standard Hypodermic needles that we remember as children. Most people (even those with needle phobias) are pleasantly surprised at how painless Acupuncture is, and often drift into deep relaxation during treatment.
Acupuncture is a natural therapy that:
- Provides drug-free treatment.
- Has little, if any side effects.
- Is holistic, treating the underlying cause not just the symptoms.
- Assists in prevention against illness and disease and maintains general well being.
The theory of Acupuncture was developed in China and first discussed in the classic text ‘Huang Di Neijing Suwen’ over 2000 years ago. The practice of Acupuncture is known today as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which includes a number of therapies under the one diagnostic framework:-
- Acupuncture
- Moxibustion
- Cupping
- Guasha
- Chinese Herbal Medicine
- Tui-na (Chinese) Massage

How does it work?
The stimulation of Acupuncture points are shown in research to have not only local, but systemic effects, assisting the body to heal itself. The classics state that when the Qi (Energy) is stuck, illness will prevail. When the Acupuncture needle is inserted it not only clears local tension, it draws the bodies attention to areas of blocked Qi, encouraging free-flow, improving micro-circulation of blood and notifying areas of weakness. Studies show that treatments can stimulate endorphins and other neurotransmitters that have positive effects on the brain, nervous and endocrine systems.
